Billy Groom of Worthing Golf Club in Sussex is the new West of England Under 16 Junior Open Champion.
This years event was staged at Knowle Golf Club for the first time, and attracted a full field of sixty boys and girls from a wide variety of clubs across England and Wales.
Billy lifted The Ken Newman Salver with two impressive scores of 69 and 72 for a one under par total of 139, just one shot ahead of Joe Retford (Cumberwell Park) who shot 140 (72, 68), and two shots ahead of Charlie Goss (Clevedon) on 141 (72,69).
The best placed Gloucestershire player in the gross standings was Jack Drury (Cotswold Hills) who shot two steady scores of 74 and 76 to finish in a tie for 9th place.
GGU players fared much better though in the Nett event, with Oli Jenkins (The Players Club) capping a tremendous season of improvement with a total of 132 (68, 64) playing off of his 10 handicap (soon to be reduced!). Oli's score was the 2nd best of the day behind Charlie Goss whose 141 gross score converted to 131 nett.
Finn Ellis (Bristol & Clifton), just 11 years old, also had an excellent day. Finn returned a nett total of 134 (69, 65) off of his 11 handicap to finish in 3rd place, just one shot behind Oli.
The GGU introduced this event back in 2013 to provide the opportunity for some of our youngest players to compete against their peers from much further afield, and it has proved a tremendous success.
As always, thanks go to Knowle for their continued support of golf in our County, and for everybody involved in staging an event of this stature.
Thanks also to all of the players and parents from around the country who travelled so far to take part; we hope you enjoyed your day.
