The 4th and final GGU U14 team match of the 2017 season was played at Bewdley Pines GC, near Kidderminster. Despite the distance travelled, all the Gloucester boys arrived in good time although Toby Janes did have to ring for directions as there were no signs to the golf club anywhere, and if you didn’t have Satnav it was a tad difficult to find!
The match was always going to be played over 18 holes so the boys sat down to bacon rolls at 11am before heading off to the practice ground ahead of the 12 noon start. Both teams were down to 9 on the day so we decided to play the lowest handicap golfer in each side in a singles match, followed by 4BBB matches with all the games played off scratch.
The weather was very kind to us all day with the sun shining through for most of it. Toby Janes led us off against Harvey Jones with both boys playing some great golf and they had an excellent match with Toby just coming out on top on the 17th green.
The fourball matches were led by Milan Reed (captain for the day) and Brandon Skidmore, fresh from his Gross 72 in the Henbury Junior Open on Monday, but they just came up short on the day losing 2 &1 to some big hitting Worecestershire boys who were just too powerful for them in the end.
Next came Harry Kennedy and Alistair Curnock who put in a very gritty display having been down early on and eventually running out winners on the final green 2 up. The third 4BBB match involved Mitchell O’Brien and Jamie Berry and whilst all square after 7 holes came up against a bit of a birdie blitz eventually losing 4&3, so with the match now poised at 2v2, it was down to the final pairing of Lewis Stalley and Dan Berry to try and win us the match.
This was only their second County match but they held up well under the pressure and secured a win (1 up) with the final putt on the final green to secure our first win of the season! Well done boys, a great result.
All the boys and squad manager, Ian James, would like to thank Stuart Pritchard (Worcestershire Secretary) and Tom Whitford (U14 Squad Manager) for their hospitality on the day and all the Worcestershire boys for a well fought contest.
Thanks also to Bewdley Pines GC for hosting the match at their course and I understand that this was the first time that the club at hosted any County event so we marked the occasion by taking a group photograph to host on the wall.
The course was presented in good condition on the day so thanks go to the Green staff for what they did and thanks also go to the Catering staff for looking after the teams so well on the day.
Yet again, it was great to see such camaraderie within the team and this has been a key feature all season no matter the result. A special thanks to Milan Reed who captained the side on the day and for giving the speech after the meal.
As always, a big thanks to all the parents for making sure the boys arrived in good time and for picking them all up afterwards. It was also good to see so many of you walking round and supporting the boys, so thanks for that as well.
And a final thanks from me and the County Junior Organiser to all the players who have represented the GGU U14 team in 2017 – it hasn’t been the best of seasons but they have all battled hard, never giving up and have all been a real credit to the County. Bring on 2018 I say!!
Under 14 Team Manager
And last of all, thanks very much from everybody involved with the GGU for his enormous contribution again this year......all on a completely voluntary basis
