A changed County 2nd team competed in the annual County 2nd team v County Seniors match at Sherdons Golf Club on Sunday 23rd April.
The match is played over 9 holes of foursomes and 18 hole of singles match play. On paper, the seniors had their work cut out against a pretty strong 2nd team, however sometimes paper does not always tell the truth.
What transpired throughout the day was plenty of very exciting golf with some of the pairings being under par for the day.
Our starter for the day, county vice president Mike Doyle-Davidson did a great job in announcing all the matches on the tee, which were led off by county 1st team players Joe Long & Joe Harvey, the seniors had their work cut as Joe & Joe started with 3 birdies, eventually winning 5&4. The other games were very closely contested, with 2 games finishing on the 17th and 2 games on the 18th. All credit to two of our young juniors who stepped in for the day, Brad Knapper and Alex Ault, who were unbeaten, taking one and a half points each.
The afternoon singles were again hotly contested with the first 6 games being shared evenly between both sides, the last 4 matches could have gone either way, however the 2nd team eventually ran
out winners of the day. I have to say, this is one of my favourite events of the calendar. It is always played in the true spirit of the game.
County Vice President, Mike Doyle-Davidson spoke highly of both teams’ etiquette and professional approach to the event, congratulating them on some outstanding golf in what was a hard fought match.
I wish Stuart Masson and his team good luck for the coming season.
Many thanks go to Sherdons Golf club and its members for making the County so welcome, yet again. The course was in great condition and the food, hospitality and service managed by Sarah were second to none, says the man who sneakily had 2 helpings.
Also, my thanks go to the many supporters – Ian Cornwell and wife Mary, Ian Watkins, Lee Knapper, Dawn Ward
