Nick Day (Henbury) won the 102nd County Men's Amateur Championship at Lansdown with an incredible score of 272, 12 under par.
Winner of the Championship for the third time in the last four years, Nick recorded scores of 70, 69, 66 and 67 to take the title by 10 shots.
This was Nick’s fourth win in total, an impressive record that puts him level with England legend Gary Wolstenholme who was also a four time winner in the 1990's.
Nick's performance wasn't the only impressive one on show though. In 2nd place with scores of 71, 70, 71, and 70 for a total of 282 was home club member Ed Butler.
‘Buttles’ played well over 100 times for the Men’s 1st Team, making his debut at South West Week in 1997, and it was great to see him competing at such a high level again after taking a break from the game.
Two shots further back in 3rd place was Alex Ireland (Brickhampton Court). Alex shot 274 (70, 73, 70, 71) to continue the steady progress he has been making over the last few seasons.
The Colts Championship, awarded to the best score by an Under 22 over the first two rounds, was won by Kieran Babbage (The Players Club) with rounds of 70 and 72, whilst The Peter Scott Trophy, awarded to the best Under 18 over the first two rounds, was won by Cameron Haines (Ross-on-Wye) with 74 and 78.
The team event for the Winterbotham Cup went to Cotswold Hills who were represented by reigning County Junior Champion Joss Edwards, former 1st Team player Charlie McLean (great to see you back) and current 1st Team regular Jake Phillips. They will now go on to represent us at the England Champion Club event at Huddersfield in September.
As always, the Gloucestershire County Championship was a superbly run event, and our thanks go to Dereck Buttler and his team for doing a brilliant job in laying everything on for the players. Dereck's work goes largely unnoticed, but it certainly doesn't go unappreciated......thanks to you all.
Thanks also go to Lansdown Golf Club who have been great supporters of County Golf for many, many years. The course was a credit to all of the members, and our thanks go to you all for allowing us the opportunity to play it.
