The playing season got off to its usual start with the annual friendly between the County 1st Team and the Under 18s. The teams compete for the Ralph Crisp Salver, kindly donated by our former County Secretary, and was played this year at Brickhampton Court Golf Club with the Juniors coming our on top by 4.5 matches to 0.5
Gary Ward, County Captain Elect, said, "I could be forgiven for supporting both sides as some would say it is a win, win for me as I look after both teams. However, just to play fair Neil Casling came out of county retirement to run the U18 team. Many thanks Neil for your support today.
As the match was being played in 4BBB format, I thought, to keep it friendly, the juniors would have the traditional 90% handicap for this format. I won’t be so eager to be this friendly next year
as the results show! I have to say, though, the juniors played some very exciting golf, certainly well below their handicaps.............I must have a chat with their relevant club handicap
The salver itself was first played for in 2002, it has now been won 6 times by each team, halved 4 and not played on just one occasion. It is a pretty special contest to say the least.
The match was played in fantastic spirits and in an extremely sporting manner, on a very well presented Brickhampton Golf Course which, for any time of year, was in great condition.
Standing out for the players were the great putting surfaces and well manicured bunkers. My thanks go out to all the members and staff for giving us a great day to remember. I would also like to thank our band of supporters who continually turn out to watch all of our County teams - they must cover some millage between them."
The Men's squad now look forward to their get together at Burnham and Berrow next Sunday (25th Feb).
