The U14 team played their 1st friendly match of the season at Filton GC, but unfortunately the weather wasn’t very kind to us with wind and rain in evidence for most of the day’s play.
The recent spell of inclement weather also meant that the course was very wet in parts so we decided to mark, lift and place in all areas of the course but it is to the credit of Filton GC that the game was even played at all given the conditions. Both the chipping green and putting green were closed so the boys had to loosen up in the net ahead of the match whilst the two squad managers exchanged foursomes pairings in the dry over a coffee!
The results sheet shows that the boys narrowly lost the match 6½ v 8½ to a very strong Somerset side. Somerset were able to field a team of 7 single figure handicappers against our 2, and their highest handicap player was 12 as opposed to our 19, so with all the matches played off scratch, the boys did incredibly well to achieve the result they did.
Honours were even after the morning foursomes at 2½ v 2½, but that doesn't tell the whole story as we could have gone into lunch with a slight advantage if the pair that halved their match had managed to just halve one of the last 3 holes!
The team captain for the day (Louis Ross) was quick to point this out over lunch and encouraged all the boys to go out with a winning mentality for the afternoon singles.
Pretty much all the games in the afternoon were tight affairs and we were 3 v 2 up after the first 5 games, and with a number of the games in the final 5 matches being all square with a few holes to go, it looked like we might pull off a much unexpected victory. Alas, it was not to be but all the boys did themselves proud and were a credit to Gloucestershire playing their matches in the right spirit.
Only 3 of the boys playing in this match will move out of the U14 squad at the end of the year so this experience will have done all the younger boys good and if they continue to progress as they have done to date, then this can only mean good things for next year.
All the boys and myself would like to thank Ian Vibert and all the Somerset boys for playing the game in the right spirit, and Filton GC for allowing us to host this match at their course. Given the conditions, the course was presented in as good a state as it could be and certainly proved a stern test off the white tees, so thanks to all the green staff for all their efforts in making sure this game was played.
The boys were suitably replenished with sandwiches at lunchtime and with chicken nuggets & chips in the evening, along with lemon cheesecake (yum!) so our thanks also go to the caterers for keeping us fed on the day. A special thanks must go to Louis Ross who was Captain on the day and gave the speech after the meal.
A final thanks to all the parents for making sure the boys arrived in good time and for picking them up promptly afterwards as without their support and commitment these matches just wouldn’t happen.
Our next match is away to Wiltshire (venue TBC) on Sunday 8th July when hopefully the U14s will get back to winning ways! As ever, any supporters who would like to come along and support the boys will be more than welcome.
