The County 1st Team got their competitive season off to the best possible start with an exciting win by 8 matches to 7 against Cornwall at Minchinhampton.
Trailing by 4 matches to 1 at lunch, our boys came storming back in the afternoon, keeping their nerve in a number of very tight games; seven of the ten matches went the full distance.
Gary Ward, County Captain, said "It was truly a miracle at Minch, 4-1 down after the morning foursomes, it was always going to be tough to pull back the deficit against a full strength Cornwall
team. However, there was a real positive air around the team all day and they certainly were up for the afternoon fight - they didn't disappoint. The whole team were just magnificent showing huge
commitment, passion, drive and enthusiasm for the result they so deserved. They should be proud of their achievement, I know I am.
My thanks go to our President Mike Doyle-Davidson for his professional starting and all day support, this along with other supporters, David Strange, Mark Powell, Ian & Mary Cornwell & Peter French.
My thanks also go to Minchinhampton Golf Club and its members for giving up their course in support of County Golf and to Sash, Adrian & Julian for great catering and service. Also, many thanks to Chris Steel and his pro shop team, along with Paul Worcester and his green keepers for getting the course in such a good condition following the appalling weather we’ve had this year.
County 2nd team v Dyfed at Forest Hills GC – after being 5-0 up after the foursomes, the match was abandoned due to course flooding. What a shame, it could have been a great double this weekend."
