14 May - 2nd Team vs Forest Hills

Nathan Moore (Long Ashton) - two wins from two games

This year I was determined to give our 2nd team more game time, with the introduction of two friendlies, against the winners of the North Gloucester League and the Bristol and District League.

The thought being that the two best club teams in the county with a home advantage would be a test for any county side.

Sunday was the first of these matches and what a thriller it was.

The 2nd team was led off with a new pairing of Thompson and Denley, and what a pairing it turned out to be. The two laid back guys just loved the course so much they decided to check it out for birdies, eventually finishing 3 under par for a fantastic win.

New pairings of Babbage / Biscoe and Scotland / Moore played some great golf, wining their matches, in great style, whilst regular pairing of Prosser / Harvey seemed just a bit out of sorts. Never the less, a good morning session which by my simple calculations only meant the team required 3.5 points to take the match.

The afternoon singles got off to a pretty shaky start, to the point where I was starting to eat my words, of only requiring 3.5 points, as through 9 holes we were staring down the barrels of a loss, being down in 7 of the 8 matches.

However, in the true Gloucestershire tradition of “never say die,” the fight back began. First home was Joe Biscoe winning 4&3, this was followed by Nathan Moore and Rob Scotland. The match was still in the balance with Josh Denley & Jake Harvey coming from behind to take their respective matches, down the last, to take a well deserved halved game apiece and the match to to our boys.

It has to be said that the Forest Hills team made us most welcome on the day and played the match in just the most fantastic of spirits. They certainly have some great players who would grace any county side. My thanks go to Stuart Hardy and his team for allowing us the unusual privilege of playing against a club side.
My thanks go to Forest Hills and its members, for giving up the course, to the greenkeeping team for a superbly presented course  - the greens were just fantastic, and their catering and bar team for their great food and service.
