The County 1st Team took on local rivals Somerset in their latest Channel League match at Ross-on-Wye, and came away with an impressive victory by 9 games to 6.
Somerset, runners-up in last year's England Golf County Championship, were always going to provide a very strong test, and our task appeared to get a little bit tougher when one of our top players, Joe Long (Lansdown), was forced to drop out on the day before the match with a foot injury.
It's a sign of the strength in our squad though that Captain, Gary Ward (The Kendleshire), was able to call up Josh Denley (pictured) who had won the Ross Scratch Cup at the same venue on the previous weekend.
Josh stepped straight into the top foursomes game alongside Mitch Waite (Filton), and despite going down by 4&2 to the very strong pairing of Tom Plumb and Tom Sloman, he performed superbly, bringing home a vital singles point in the afternoon against Sam Sloman....well done Josh!
As is often the case these days, it was a very tight match from start to finish, and as in our previous match against Cornwall, it was great to see us more than holding our own in a high percentage of the tight games. That quality, along with the stunning golf that brought relatively comfortable victories in five of the matches bodes very well for the future.
In winning, Gary Ward said, "I'm absolutely delighted for the lads. Beating a team as strong as Somerset gives us a huge amount of confidence going into South West Week at Cumberwell Park, and sets us up perfectly for the rest of the season. As always, our thanks go to the host club for looking after us so well, and to our opponents for playing the game in exactly the right spirit."
