The U14 and U16 squads gathered at Filton GC in Bristol on a sunny & breezy spring day for the annual U14/U16 North v South match. The boundary line fell at Chipping Sodbury this year but there was a wide range of handicaps in play so there were some matches where shots were given/received rather than playing the traditional scratch match play format.
The results sheet is attached below and the morning foursomes saw some great golf played with the North holding a slender 1 point lead (3.5 v 2.5) going into lunch after some very tight and close fought encounters.
The last match was a singleton v foursome pairing due to numbers available on the day but this match remained competitive throughout and turned out to be a very up and down match with the South eventually running out 2&1 winners.
In the afternoon, Seb Pender got the North off to a very good start with a win over Kobe Wesson but Ben Tooth soon made up the ground in the next match with a win over Alex Cruickshank. Harry Griffiths then put the North back in front with a fine win over Jake Harris before Oli Jenkins restored parity to the afternoon singles with a good win for the South over Louis D’Ambrosio.
Then came a couple of big wins for Toby Janes over Harry Brookes and Alistair Curnock over Harry Kennedy leaving the afternoon singles at 3 all with all to play for. Brandon Skidmore secured another point for the North with a win over Lewis Ault before the South stormed back with 3 fine wins from Louis Ross over Edmund Fry, Milan Reed over Jamie Berry and Ethan Holway over Lewis Stalley leaving the total scores at 7.5 (North) versus 8.5 (South) with 2 points still up for grabs.
The final match saw Mitchell O’Brien playing two games for the South and unfortunately lost them both with one of the matches going to the last putt on the last green, so the North ran out eventual winners 9.5 v 8.5.
Congratulations to the North on a fine win and well done to the boys for playing the games in such a sporting & spirited way. It was great to see such camaraderie and it all bodes well for the future of GGU Junior golf!
Both Squads and U14 squad Manager Ian James would like to thank Past President Ian Cornwell for his support in the morning and also Past President Peter French and his wife Olive in the afternoon. It was Peter’s birthday and he was treated to some fine golf by the boys (along with a fish and chip lunch by Olive!).
A big thank you to all the parents for getting the lads there in good time and their support on the day as well.
Finally, a special thanks from GGU to everyone one at Filton Golf Club for everything they did for the squad on the day, from producing a course in fine condition for the time of year to the great food provided by the caterers at both lunchtime and in the evening. The boys even had a choice of chicken Nuggets or Burger!
