The County 1st Team got their season off to the best possible start with a convincing victory by 12.5 games to 2.5 at Stinchcombe Hill.
With a number of regulars from last year unavailable for a variety of reasons, Paul Garland selected a young team to represent us and they didn't disappoint.
Matthew Bell (Lilley Brook), Josh Denley (Chipping Sodbury), Calum Mortimore (Henbury) and Harrison Ottley-Woodd (Cotswold Hills) were all handed their debuts, an occasion which will be particularly memorable for Calum.
Selected to partner clubmate Nick Day in the top foursomes game, Calum selected a three wood on the 276 yard par 4 1st hole.......and duly holed out !! What a start to his 1st Team career.
Paul was delighted with his team, commenting "It was a lovely sunny day at Stinchcombe, for the annual friendly, and Nick and Calum got us off to the best possible start with their 5&4 win setting us up to win the morning foursomes 5.0. The obvious highlight being Calum's hole in one on the first. The afternoon singles also went our way winning 7 and a half points front 10.
The army of support was treated to some great golf played by the whole team which include maximum points from Josh Denley, Matt Bell and Alex Ward who finished with a great eagle on the last to win 1 up.
Many thanks to Stinchcombe and all of their staff for looking after us, the course looking fantastic in the April sunshine."
With this years first Channel League match not taking place until July, the focus will now turn to all of the upcoming stroke play events taking place at County, National and Regional level; this result suggests that the competition for places in this year's South West Week team will be the hottest it's been for many years.
